Review: Highland Fling by Krystal Brookes

"HIGHLAND FLING titillates with an abundance of sensually arousing scenes."

The Kilrigh Heat series kicks off with a sexy story about two individuals becoming much more than just friends. With a Scottish setting filled with accuracy over and over again, Krystal Brookes makes her delightful tale come alive on every page.

Before even departing the ferry that brought her back to Kilrigh Island where she grew up, Fiona Campbell comes in contact with Brodie MacNeil. Although he was a very good friend when she was a younger, she has not seen him since she had a teenage crush on him. With the way he talks to her every time she runs into him thereafter, it seems as if he would like to renew their friendship and possibly turn it into something more.

However, Fiona has returned to Kilrigh for only a couple of weeks to participate in the wedding of a friend, and she feels there are too many differences for them to ever have a lasting relationship. There is also the matter of some bad memories connected to her childhood, so she believes staying in the area could never make her happy. After seeing Brodie on numerous occasions, Fiona considers agreeing to his suggestion of enjoying a sexual relationship while she is there. If she does say yes, she plans for no emotions to be involved.

Krystal Brookes brings realism to her Scottish story. Though the Island of Kilrigh may be fictional, a vivid picture of the different locales is clearly visualized through the author’s depiction of the surroundings. What really makes the story seem particularly genuine is the use of so many valid words that someone who lives in Scotland would actually use on a daily basis. Since Ms. Brookes in fact does live in the area where the book takes place, I knew any expressions included in the book are suitable. Anything having to do with Scotland has always fascinated me, so HIGHLAND FLING appealed to me on quite a few levels. Besides the setting and some local traditions plus proper word usage, the characters are also befitting someone who lives in the region, especially Brodie. While he may not be a medieval knight about whom I often fantasize, he does put on a kilt and is certainly a commanding male. Fiona may have left Kilrigh Island, but she has not forgotten many of the customs and starts to question whether city life is what is best for her. The theme of friends becoming lovers is a common one, but Ms. Brookes adds in her own colorful narrative plus a conflict to make things intriguing. When it comes to any intimate situations between Brodie and Fiona, the scenes offer lots of diversity where their lusty desires are expressed in various ways. Krystal Brookes is planning additional books in this steamy series, and I definitely want to visit with more of the likable residents of Kilrigh. HIGHLAND FLING is packed with passion, misgivings and spirited characters.
