Review: Howl For It by Shelly Laurenston and Cynthia Eden
“Like a Wolf with a Bone” by Shelly Laurenston – www.shellylaurenston.com/ War may not have been popular with many individuals, whether human or shapeshifter, in 1974, but Egbert Ray Smith is proud to be a Marine and he is capable of protecting any species. When forced on leave, the wolf shifter decides to go back home to the hills of Tennessee and be with his family. Shortly after arriving, Eggie takes a trip with his brothers and becomes involved in a ruckus where a female from another pack is threatened. When Darla Mae Lewis came to visit with her family, she had no idea how much her life would change. As a pastry chef in San Francisco, her existence is much calmer than when she lived with her relatives as they always seemed to be arguing, especially spats between her sisters and the Smith brothers. When Eggie takes Darla to his hometown for her own protection, the she-wolf learns the daringly bold man watching over her is not someone whom she should fear. Shelly Laurenston dominates when it comes to originality, especially when it pertains to characters. From names to personalities, everyone in this story is depicted with an individuality that conveys just how different they are from any others. I hooted out loud several times, as words spoken or actions taken are very humorous. The novella features the parents of another Pride series character and explains how they actually got together in 1974. Numerous references to the time period certainly brought back memories to me, and the added bonus of country-living shapeshifters made the era even more compelling. Eggie and Darla are a delightful couple, and visiting with them is a real treat. “Like a Wolf with a Bone” is a down-home good time of fussin’, lovin’ and bakin’. “Wed or Dead” by Cynthia Eden – www.cynthiaeden.com/ At their first meeting, Kayla Kincaid wanted to make a good impression on Gage Riley in order to get close to him. However, the human female definitely never thought the two would end up having a Vegas wedding. Kayla believes she is aware of all there is to know about the particularly tempting wolf shifter, but there are still some facts he keeps to himself until after they are married. Just when things are becoming very intense between them on their first day as man and wife, men who are hunting him burst into their room and threaten his life. This compels Gage to flee the hotel and take Kayla with him. Although these two are entirely different when it comes to genetic traits, they are bound together by their sudden marriage. Now they just have to overcome the secrets in her life that she is closely guarding, or their relationship will not be long-lasting and his pack could perhaps be doomed. There are surprises galore in this extremely action-packed story filled with creative paranormal elements. The supernatural beings are so well described that I could envision them in any form and even hear those rumbling growls. Cynthia Eden delivers when it comes to werewolves, as the talented author always creates exceptional creatures in every way possible. Gage and Kayla start out as polar opposites though the lust they feel for the other steadily draws them together, and eventually makes these two question their beliefs about humans interacting with werewolves. Their sexual appetite is one area where they agree, as scenes containing intimacy are exceptionally sensual because of potent carnal desire. “Wed or Dead” has an awesome couple, fiery passions and profoundly dangerous peril.
