Date Night

Thanks to Donna and Ally for inviting me to guest blog. When they first asked me to fill in I had to think quick for a topic. So I decided to share some thoughts that have been on my mind recently.

Date Nights

I can’t tell ya’ll how many parents I know who never take date nights. Who rarely make time for themselves as individuals much less as a couple. I can’t help but wonder how their relationship is fairing.

We’re fans of romance, so one would think we would make time for romance in our own life, right? It doesn’t have to be a big production, I don’t think. In fact, I prefer when it’s not.

A simple, inexpensive bouquet of flowers snuck into the shopping cart at the grocery, a love note left by the coffee pot, or just thinking far enough in advance to offer to pick the kids up from school.

Back to date nights…

As a couple, I think it’s very important to make time for you, the two of you. You as a couple… you know, that person you love, the one you’re committed to, your SOS. Remember why you fell in love with him (or her?) Great. Remember that and now, go out. Hire a baby sitter, or offer to watch a friend’s kids if they’ll watch yours. Now, go out. Eat dinner. Take a walk. Don’t go to a movie, you can do that at home and it doesn’t allow for a lot of talking.

Talk.

But more importantly, listen. Keep your heart open. Keep your ears open.

Have fun. Smile. Try to make each other laugh. Hold hands. Kiss. Be thoughtful. Be a giver. Look each other in the eye.

But be there. In that moment. Give your SOS your undivided attention. Which means no books, no cell phones, no email, no sports. Just the two of you. Together.

Happy Dating!

Love,
