Review: Hot Comfort, Raven McKnight, Editor

""

A delightful collection of meteoric tales, Hot Comfort features stories by Luisa Prieto, Maura Andersen, Kimberly Gardner, and Jet Mykles.

Luisa Prieto pens the first story with “Cooking With Ergot.” Dominic Abernathy hosts a cooking show where he cooks with magic. His guest host for his featured gingerbread houses has cancelled and his producer has arranged for Carter Brooks to fill in. Alarmed, Dominic tries to intercede. He knows that wherever Carter goes, witches disappear. Tracking down Carter though yields more emotions than Dominic anticipated.

“Bittersweet” is one of Maura Andersen’s tales. Brandon Williams makes erotic chocolate art and toys. He is just finishing up one order when David Sterling arrives to pick it up for his friend Chris, the bride to be. Brandon would not mind pursuing a relationship but David but is sure it will never work. He was burned once before and does not want to get involved with another suit.

Kimberly Gardner’s tale is called “The Shape of the Heart.” Zach Jenson is the owner of Bean Readin’. His partner, Jay, died two years ago and he has not been able to move on. When his new partner hires Keith Harte to help out, Zach’s desire rises for the first time and he is not sure he is ready. But Keith’s past is catching up with him and it may be only Zach that can help him.

In “Giving Thanks,” Maura Anderson tells the story of Troy and Derek. Thanksgiving is just a day away and Troy arrives home to find his partner preparing lots of food. Derek and his father had an argument at the family restaurant. When he found out that Derek is gay, he struck him and fired him. Devastated, Derek prepares a Thanksgiving dinner to show how thankful he is for Troy. Thanksgiving day dawns and brings more than a few surprises for Troy and Derek.

The final entry is “Devon Cream” by Jet Mykles. Steven Connolly hears a basket ball hit his door and opens it to find a young man, Devon Pavenic, moving into the upstairs apartment. Devon is devastated that he broke a figurine and Steven knows he must help him move in. The two establish a friendship that Steven would like to become so much more but Devon is straight or is he?
