Sensual Reads Guest Blog: Researching New Worlds of Romantic Fantasy with Tara Newlands

I’ve always been fascinated by world history, what people have seen and where they’ve been.  As a writer, I still feel like the world is a magical place.

There is something peaceful, something eternal about humankind; that even for all our savagery, our misdeeds as a group we are still capable of creating beautiful lasting works of art.  Yet, there is also my own sense of speculation at forgotten or overlooked history and I have still found no better place in my travels to various places than visiting local area museums to gain a sense of where people have been.

I live outside one of the oldest cities in the western world, London. It’s a city that contains some of the best museums I’ve ever seen.  Visiting London’s’ museums is really a memorable experience.  It helped me to create ‘Nirvana’, where fantasy and history collided into a story that was truly fun to write.

Walking seemingly endless museum hallways with small noticeable and unnoticeable nooks containing some of humankind’s greatest feats plus defeats with a trusty PDA allowed me the chance to give full reign to wild imaginings where history coupled with myth truly came to life.  It’s the next best thing to being there and that’s the best kind of research.

For paranormal and urban fantasy authors, the world of imagination is a playground where everything that seems impossible is possible pairing this lust for different off beat travels with the historic accuracy of contact with ancient artifacts can make for interesting reading.

I think this is part of the popularity of Urban fantasy romance novels of all types matching this with heroes that make a woman’s mouth water takes readers on travels that stretch  beyond their limits taking them outside themselves for a while.  I enjoy reading these types of stories for the simple reason that becoming someone else through the magic of a story for a brief time continues to help me believe that this world we live in is a wonderful place still overflowing in possibility.  Coupling that with life affirming knowledge that good sex is good for you brings together all the elements that erotic romance readers ask for.  These elements can be taken into real life to enhance relationships that might have gotten stale or bring magic back to couples struggling to connect and in the beginning wasn’t that part of what got ancient people creating in the first place?  It’s no wonder ‘muse’ is a root word in museum, visiting those places continues to create new worlds from the shadows of the old.
