Masquerade of the Cursed King by Vanessa N. Gilfoy

"Survival and hope for a new beginning."

Eleanor Borona may be a hybrid elf but that doesn’t mean she wishes her life were different. She loves the King of Biston, Erick, but he can’t see what is in front of him, of the woman that loves him and can help him. But that is all about to change when he sees again the young woman he used to love when everything was innocent and free. Eleanor has changed and not in a good way, according to Erick, he wants her but feels that he has to protect her from himself. His only problem is that Eleanor is his fated mate, the only one that can help him rebuild his ruined kingdom and lift the curse on him but will they be able to discover this or will circumstances force their hand in a different direction?

Masquerade of the Cursed King by Vanessa N. Gilfoy is a fantasy tale of a tortured hero who can’t see what he has before him and a heroine who knows what she wants but isn’t about to waste her time on a man that won’t or can’t see her. I am in two minds about this book, on one hand it’s compelling and telling the story of loss but also about survival and hope for a new beginning, but on the other hand it has a hero that is tortured and so full of self-doubt and pity that he sometimes gets on your nerves. There were times when I just wanted to yell at Erick to get over it and get on with living, while at other times I could understand what he was thinking. And Eleanor, I felt sorry for her most of the time, she loves a man that can’t see her as she really is, the woman who could and would help him to rebuild his shattered kingdom but overall she was strong with her convictions, never once swaying from what she wanted to do, which was escape from the prison that fate and those around her had chosen for her. There are so many characters in this book and each have their own agendas and that’s what I liked about this book even though there were aspects I didn’t like. I can’t wait to see what Ms. Gilfoy does with this fantasy world she has created.
