Sensual Reads Guest Blog: Getting those ideas inside my head down onto paper… by Stevie Woods
I counted my releases today and was rather surprised to find that I’ve had 25 publications of varying lengths (and that’s not counting the free reads): 5 novels, 14 novellas and 6 short stories. I hadn’t realized I was that prolific! I like to write in a variety of genres: Historical, Paranormal, SF, Fantasy and Contemporary, and of course the various mixes therein. Most of my works contain adventure of some sort, whether it’s the attack of Barbary pirates, the horror of impending Civil war, the dread of other-worldly threats, or simply the difficulty in living in the modern world. Yeah, I always think it is difficult trying to pin down a story into just one genre. I’m never really quite sure where the ideas for the stories come from. It’s easy to rattle off about having a muse, but the reality is I get a sudden desire to write a particular type of story and that’s when the hard work begins. Creating the characters and discovering the world in which they live. I had chosen the subject for this Blog about three months ago when I booked the slot, but had no idea then what the actual content would be. I had been going through a difficult spell at that time with my writing. I’ve had a lot of releases over the last few months and it seemed I was spending more time doing edits in preparation for those publications than actually writing anything new, with the result that when I did return to my then-WIP I found it difficult to put words onto paper. They were floating around up there, I’d even scribbled notes for reference, but still it seemed the words were elusive. Not the first time that has happened, of course. I wouldn’t call it writer’s block, more like writer’s hesitation. I have different ways of dealing with it, depending on how I feel at the time. Sometimes I simply put the computer aside and do something totally different, something I hate like doing the ironing! Other times I might just need to relax with a good book, and I have plenty of choices as I never seem to be able to keep up with the many excellent gay releases I want to read. Another method is to open up a short story I’d been working on. I usually have a short story in the background that I can turn to when one of my longer projects is proving troublesome. Occasionally I might do some research, depending on the type of story I’m working on there might be a little or a lot of research required. Sometimes these methods will kick start the ‘muse’, other times not. The thing is I feel this need to write, so when this happens it is really frustrating. I’ll go back to that short story again, almost force myself to write – something, anything. I have finished a few short stories that way LOL! But the longer one will still stall for a while. In the end I cannot really say what brings the words forth again, but one day when I open my WIP the words will come. Slowly and stiffly at first, and usually those sections end up being edited out, but that doesn’t matter as once the words begin to flow, the odds are they will remain. Eventually that WIP is finished and I sigh, waiting for the next idea. I’ll tell myself it’s good, I can take that well deserved rest now. I’ll read that book that’s been waiting for a while, but I know it’ll not be long before I’m sitting at my keyboard again writing something else. Like I said before, writing is something I need to do, almost like being addicted I guess. It’s seems odd to me now that until a few years ago – let me think, probably about 2003 – I had never seriously put pen to paper and now I can’t imagine a day passing when I don’t write something; whether it is an announcement to one of the various lists I belong to – or a Blog post.
A long time avid reader of romance with a dash of adventure, Stevie only stumbled over ‘slash’ pairings a few years ago and was an immediate convert. Having dabbled with writing on and off for years, it wasn’t long before Stevie was tapping away on the keyboard inventing stories around two hot guys, gaining her first publication in the summer of 2007. Stevie likes reading stories with a good strong plot and believable characters and does her best to create them in her own work. Stevie has a soft spot for historical settings but also thoroughly enjoys SF and Fantasy, Paranormal and Contemporary, finding the similarities as intriguing as the differences. Stevie already has several novels, novellas and short stories released by Torquere Press, Phaze Books and MLR Press. Writing gay romance stories? Oh, that’s interesting. I never tried reading that kind of material yet but I will try it. Besides, that can really happen. And Stevie Woods is good writer so I am excited to know how the gay romance stories will flow.
