Review: Educating Emily by Beverly Havlir

"Sign me up for detention!"

E-zine writer/co-founder Emily Sinclair is all-grown up and has decided to make a play on her girlhood crush, hottie “whose parents live next door to” hers, Devlin McKay. Emily snags Devlin’s attention when she asks him to help her with an upcoming article on 10 different ways to drive a man crazy in bed. Financial investor Devlin knows that it’s crazy to embark on a sexual journey with the sexy-but-nearly-innocent Emily, but she has captured both his attention and libido and he agrees to help – with certain conditions. Emily must do what Devlin tells her to do, without question, and Devlin is in charge of Emily’s pleasure. Giddy with her success and refusing to see any problems with a no-strings, short-term affair, Emily agrees. But is either one prepared when unexpected emotions arise and they find themselves entangled in all sorts of string?

When I first started reading Educating Emily, I was afraid that I was going to be stuck with the well-used storyline of a woman tricking a man to notice her by asking him to teach her how to seduce men. But this story wasn’t typical and I enjoyed the difference. Emily is open and direct in her approach, and like Devlin, I thought she was like a breath of fresh air. Aware of her inexperience, she confronts her fears when dealing with Dev and she is receptive (very much so) to all the tips Devlin brings to the bedroom, I mean, table, I mean – never mind. And Devlin – what can I say about him, beyond that he’s hot and dangerous, he respects Emily and he too doesn’t play games (except for in the bedroom). It is so refreshing to read a story that features characters who aren’t afraid of their sexuality, their feelings or even the reactions of their family. Fortunately for me, there are five brothers between Devlin and Emily and a couple of friends, so I hope that Ms. Havlir will bring us back to the neighborhood again and again.
