Authors, add your free read. Review: Hotter After Midnight by Cynthia Eden
Although she is known as the “Monster Doctor”, psychologist Dr. Emily Drake is proud of her work with those known as the Other. It seems this human woman has the ability to pick up the thoughts and emotions of supernatural beings but not other humans. So, if a vampire has an aversion to drinking blood, Emily is the one person who might be able to help by giving advice about their problem. During one late night session, Emily is interrupted by a cop from the Atlanta police department, saying his captain needs for her to look at a crime scene. Even though she is wary of Detective Colin Gyth, as she can immediately tell he is a Shifter, she agrees to accompany him. After arriving at the gruesome scene, Emily can sense that an Other was responsible for the murder. When Colin realizes the rumors about the psychologist are true, he fears she will let everyone know about his ability to shift from a man into an animal. However, they will both have to overcome their mistrust of each other as they find themselves working the case together, he as lead detective and she as a profiler. As their investigation reveals a number of clues, they also find themselves unwillingly desiring each other. When threats become frighteningly real, Colin knows he will do whatever it takes to keep Emily safe, as he is beginning to think of her as his woman in every aspect. She, on the other hand, must face a fear from her past or a killer may never be stopped. Cynthia Eden writes stories with emotional mastery, as readers also experience every thought and reaction of the characters. The intimately expressed scenes let one feel as though they come to know each individual on a personal level, often forming a deep connection between the reader and the book’s characters. In HOTTER AFTER MIDNIGHT, the hero and heroine are two spirited beings whose physical makeup and mental outlook are very dissimilar. Yet when Colin and Emily find themselves working together to catch a merciless killer, they discover things between them may not be as different as they first believed. The animalistic behavior sometimes depicted by Colin is superbly described by Ms. Eden, giving me a clear picture of this man’s strengths and mindset. Shifter heroes have always been a favorite of mine, and this skilled author has given me one absolutely hot man to let enter my dreams. Emily is also interesting in numerous ways, and the haunted pasts of them both make this couple even more compelling. The secondary characters are well-described, from Colin’s charming partner to the ruthless killer plus many more, and the traits of each one help to keep the plot moving along steadily. With danger never far away from Colin and Emily, the suspense is frequently sky-high and relentlessly escalates with every page turned. There is even some interspersed humor in the story, often coming during some of the more threatening moments. HOTTER AFTER MIDNIGHT is chillingly realistic from the ever-present supernatural danger, yet the blazing sensuality repeatedly steams up the scenes with heat, too.
