Review: Fire Chronicles 2: Trial by Fire by K. B. Forrest

"Atar is no longer the Idiot of the barbarian tribe. He becomes a man with new powers that he must learn to use."

Atar flees from his tribe.  The tribe blames him for the death of the Chief.  Atar has only one place left to go: the great One Hundred Year Festival.  With his lover, the werewolf Billiwuf, at his side, Atar explores the wonders available to him if he can find the money to purchase it.  Atar wants to make a new life for himself and Billiwuf in the wilderness.  In order to survive he needs food and equipment and he must earn money to get what he needs.  Atar takes part in competitions that offer cash prizes.  Atar shows courage and honor when he takes part in the contests.  His performance catches the eye of an evil wizard who mistakes Atar for his lost son.  The One Hundred Year Festival will reveal Atar’s future.  Will Atar survive long enough to begin his new life in the wilderness with Billiwuf?

Dahaka, the wizard, fathered a son who disappeared.  When he first sees Atar he mistakes him for that son.  He soon learns that Atar is really the son of his enemy, the current Firestarter, and his real son is Atar’s enemy, Zohak, the new Chief of the barbarian tribe.  Zohak hates Atar passionately and wants him dead.  Dahaka encourages his son to kill his enemy, but Zohak fails every time.  Dahaka wants his son to be the selected as the new Firestarter, but Atar stands in his way.  Can Dahaka keep Atar from assuming his rightful place as his father’s heir?

In the second book of the Fire Chronicles, K. B. Forrest sends Atar on a journey that will open his eyes to the wonders of the world around him.  The people he meets are very different from the barbarians of his tribe.  As Atar wins the different contests at the Festival, the people take notice.  Mr. Forrest shows Atar’s introduction to civilization with numerous humorous experiences as well as dangerous encounters with his enemies.  Atar is no longer the Idiot of the barbarian tribe.  He becomes a man with new powers that he must learn to use.  Will Atar go off into the wilderness as planned or will the needs of society keep him occupied?
