Review: Angel Betrayed (The Fallen) by Cynthia Eden

"What someone will do because of love is taken to the extreme in ANGEL BETRAYED, as desire wars with long-held goals."

The Fallen series makes the reader wonder if humans are actually being watched over, and what rules these celestial beings must follow. Cynthia Eden keeps the line of good and evil constantly changing, as one seemingly decent deed may be immediately followed by a rather dubious moral act, and these questionable episodes keep the anticipation level set on high until the final confrontation.

Since Sammael is an Angel of Death, he observes the final moments of a human life and then takes their souls. He is never to interfere in any way, yet an event where innocents are killed compels him to take the lives of those responsible. Although the men deserved to die, Sam broke a rule so he is forced out of heaven and becomes one of the Fallen living on Earth. He now answers to no one and uses his abilities to make those who commit merciless acts pay for their dark deeds according to his own set of laws.

After having lived for centuries, Sam now runs a club in New Orleans. One day, an employee, Seline O’Shaw, says she needs to collect on a previous favor and needs his protection. While he has definitely noticed the enticing female, he does not trust her and will not readily agree to aid her. Seline turns to her skills as a seductress in order to get Sam to help her, and she puts a plan into motion that will hopefully benefit her but might possibly harm him. Soon their distrust turns into something entirely different, and their futures are anything but certain.

Cynthia Eden ingeniously makes the paranormal world seem believable. No matter what type of supernatural creature is created, their corporeal bodies will be vividly depicted while their mindset is shown through their actions. Ms. Eden has crafted a number of diverse beings for her previous books, and none are more convincing than her compelling angels who have fallen for various reasons. Background information is gradually divulged about Sam, and the reader comes to understand his motivations and eventually his inner longings. Though unusually powerful, he does possess caring traits that can be seen from time to time, and this attribute helps to define his real nature. Even the incident that caused him to fall is not the norm, thus letting me know there is much more to Sam than your average Angel of Death. When he and Seline first connect, doubts about the other only escalate with each new situation. Building trust is an extremely tricky journey, where danger and passion often collide. Her succubus side made the sex between Sam and Seline particularly fiery and very enthusiastic, and they unleashed their desire quite frequently. Ms. Eden knows how to make each intimate scene unique, and these two are certainly creative. The threats that just seem to never go away are sometimes terrifying, especially to us humans, and how they manage to escape several of the more frightening circumstances are clever and prove their cunningness. There are lots of battles in the story, and each one only upped my apprehension as to how everything would finally play out in the end. Another book in The Fallen series is coming out later this year, and I so hope it is about Azrael, another intriguing angel who has fallen. ANGEL BETRAYED is spellbinding with enthralling adventures, scorching sex and conflicted emotions.
